Artist statement: My mother, a Ukrainian, was born in Germany in the aftermath of World War II. Now a new war is again tearing the country apart. The young woman in the photo is my mother when she was a teenager. The hat is the style worn by my godfather, also Ukrainian. The scene represents pain, suffering, and also desperate hope.

Artist statement: I am half Ukrainian; I grew up in the US surrounded by the Ukrainian community. The traditional Ukrainian Easter Eggs were always on display in our home. This piece represents the pain and helplessness I feel as the Ukrainian War continues to destroy so many lives. I wanted it to convey a sense of constructed unreality, that this shouldn't be real.

Artist statement: Creating a piece of art is a journey whose destination is not known. Whatever the inspiration may be, it is the conversation between this, the artist and medium that triggers the marks that create a new reality. It is during this process that we access the deep well of visual memory that excites us when the work acquires a life of its own on paper or canvas. I am filled with a sense of awe at the beauty in the world and gratitude for the gift of expression.
Specific medium: oil on canvas

Artist statement: I am struck with the beauty of Carolina Horsenettle, an invasive weed growing alongside a local church parking lot. I have watched them alter their appearance from one season to the next. Small purple flowers in early spring give way to green berries later in the season.. The green turns to bright yellow in summer and then they collapse upon themselves before falling off in the autumn.
