Out of the Primordial Soup: Eastern Painted Turtle
Out of the Primordial Soup: Eastern Painted Turtle
Mark Phillips
$200.00

Artist statement: In May 2024, with the Farmington River swollen above capacity, I ventured down an offshoot of the river that led me to a pond hidden way back in the woods. To my astonishment, hundreds of Eastern Painted Turtles greeted me in what I have to assume was their breeding location. I was able to visit six times that month before the water level dropped, making access inaccessible to my kayak. Out of the Primordial Soup describes this modern day dinosaurs climb from the pollen laden water.

Artist statement: Looking like a modern day dinosaur, an Eastern Painted Turtle balances on a rock in what I came to call Turtle Pond in Curtiss Park in Simsbury, CT. In May 2024, with the Farmington River swollen above capacity, I ventured down an offshoot of the river in Curtiss Park that led me to the turtle's hidden breeding grounds. I was able to make six trips in before the water level dropped and the stream in became impassable to my kayak. That was a really sad day.

The One Day Home
The One Day Home
Mark Phillips
$250.00

Artist statement: Sometimes you see the coolest thing in your own backyard. I grew an okra plant for the first time in CT. The first flower on the plant took me by surprise. It lasted one day. The second one appeared and a Katydid, also called a long horned grasshopper, made a one-day residency and gave me three chances to capture an image. The macro lens, depth of field, and the right light appeared in the very last frame taken.

Anju Pillai
$450.00

Artist statement: Often we don different masks while going through day to day life. Through my watercolor portrait I try to capture pride I see in the woman of her heritage and roots underneath all the intricate designs painted all over her face and body. She incites curiosity about her but at the same time you see power too. Nothing can takeaway that aspect of her. Every time I see her, she inspires me to be proud of myself and stand tall.

Theeyam
Theeyam
Anju Pillai
$350.00

Artist statement: Theyyam has its roots in the ancient Dravidian culture of South India and is a part of the tribal culture of Kerala where animism was the form of worship. This unique dance form is a synthesis of rituals, dance, vocal and instrumental music. The dance is often performed by men from the same family through generations. Once costumed as Theeyam, it is believed that the spirit of the deity is conceptually transferred to the artist and they are considered as God by the devotees who seek blessings.

Tracy Arm Growler
Tracy Arm Growler
Allison Rainville

Artist statement: This growler (small iceberg) in Tracy Arm, Alaska, caught my eye as we were cruising up the fjord in a zodiac. The blue of the ice is incredible! I managed to shoot this as we were floating by, with the gorgeous blue sky and the wilderness of Tongass National Forest behind it.

Allison Rainville

Artist statement: On the first day of an expedition cruise in Alaska, I took this photo early in the morning as we were moving toward Harvard Glacier (center left) in College Fjord. It was a beautiful morning, and I could not believe how perfect the reflection of the mountains was on the water.
Gimsøy Kirke
Gimsøy Kirke
Allison Rainville

Artist statement: Gimsøy Kirke is hidden away on the northern end of the island of Gimsøy in the Lofoten Islands in Norway. These remote islands are known for their craggy mountains that fall directly to the ocean, which can be seen in the background here. The small cemetary in the foreground houses graves mostly from the early 20th century.

Hamnøy Rorbuer
Hamnøy Rorbuer
Allison Rainville

Artist statement: Taken near Reine, in the Lofoten Islands in Norway, this image is often considered to be the quintessential Lofoten Islands image. It contains everything that Lofoten is known for - stark mountains leading straight into the sea, scattered with red houses. These rorbuer (cottages) originally housed fishermen who made up the bulk of the industry on the islands. Lofoten is not Lofoten without the red rorbuer!
